Revived Kumasi Shoe Factory to Make Shoes & Sandals for Pupils in Deprived Communities The revived Kumasi Shoe Factory now Defence Industries Holding Company Limited DIHOC,is to produce Shoes and Sandals to accompany the free School uniforms being distributed to pupils in deprived communities. The DIHOC Shoe factory which has been defunct since the early 1990s was revived in 2012 and is currently being operated under the Ministry of Defence. With about four hundred workers, the factory produces Boots and Shoes for personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and will soon start providing other Security Services with Boots. President John Mahama, who visited the factory as part of his three day visit to the Ashanti region said government will support any enterprise that has the potential to expand and create job opportunities. Radio Ghana’s Presidential Correspondent, Pascaline Adadevoh reports that the Kumasi Shoe Factory was established during the regime of Dr Kwame Nkrumah. The factory worked till the early 1990s when it became inactive as a result of many factors.In 2011, the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited DIHOC established as an offshoot of the Ghana Armed Forces sent in a bid to the Divestiture Implementation Committee to revive the defunct Kumasi Shoe factory. DIHOC was established for the Military to partner local or foreign investors to produce Textiles, Footwear, affordable housing, dairy farms among others for local consumption and export.
