Revolution to Evolution│Shaping Our Future Workshop Highlights (Subject to Changes) NABJ will present its signature programming at #NABJ14, scheduled July 30-Aug. 3 at the John Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center and Sheraton Boston. Here are a few programs you will not want to miss including a few stellar offerings that require advanced registration. NABJ Town Hall Join Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Kenneth J. Cooper for a Tuesday Town Hall meeting as local panels explore topics such as Development vs. Displacement and access to careers in the technical service economy, high-impact issues for African American residents in the Roxbury section of Boston. NABJ will partner with community organizations such as the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts and Delta Sigma Theta in developing content for this special community event at Hibernian Hall. The Voting Rights Act turns 50 “What We Lost When We Lost Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act” will explore the nationwide explosion of new voting restrictions after a key provision of the act was struck down last June. This workshop will highlight the strategies of grassroots organizations such as Florida’s Dream Defenders, North Carolina NAACP’s “Moral Mondays” movement and the Advancement Project, which are challenging voter suppression with open lawsuits. CNN Reporters Workshop Are you a journalist looking to hone your skills? Are you working as a reporter now but aspiring to become a national correspondent? Then you should consider applying for this broadcast training session. Gain firsthand knowledge in this daylong interactive workshop that will provide the tools to build on existing skills. Leaders from the broadcast and cable news industry will provide their insights. This workshop is open to 20 applicants who submit a resume, cover letter explaining why you should be selected and reel for consideration. The Signature Career Branding Exchange NABJ members who register for our convention by May 1 will have the opportunity to attend an intimate informative talk with some of journalisms biggest names including Kevin Merida, managing editor of the Washington Post; Sheila Brooks, founder and CEO of SRB Communications; Benet Wilson, aviation journalist and blogger; Dwayne Wickham, NABJ founder and dean of the School of Global Journalism & Communication at Morgan State University; Danese Kenon, NABJ Visual Task Force Chair and multimedia photojournalist at The Indianapolis Star; and Jemele Hill, journalist and on-air reporter for ESPN. (Advance registration required) Authors Showcase Joy-Ann Reid, managing editor of TheGrio and an on-air contributor on MSNBC, will present a special conversation with authors during this year’s showcase. Attendees also will hear from leading publishing houses such as Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins about how to get the “green light” for their book projects. Producing Better Producers To help our members meet their career goals and to assist stations in hiring news line producers, NABJ is holding a half-day workshop on producing. Applicants must submit a resume and a recent newscast for a review. During the critique, the producer will have the opportunity to hear the thought process behind each decision they made. The workshop will help to improve the art of writing teases and headlines and presenters will discuss what constitutes a lead story and why. Producers will receive tips on how to handle difficult employees, how to position themselves for promotion and how to more effectively network. At the end of the workshop, producers will gain skills to enhance their careers and the sponsoring companies will have resumes from producers they can consider for employment. Mid-Term Politics As the nation approaches the critical fall elections, a bellwether for the 2016 Presidential Election, we will offer a panel on how to cover this key newsroom beat. This panel will discuss ways to improve coverage and how to position yourself as a go-to political reporter in your newsroom. Experienced national reporters will share their tips on securing this high-profile beat. Being a Black Celtic One of the most beloved, despised and legendary sports franchises will be discussed by this panel that offers NABJ members a chance to hear from some of Bostons most notable black athletes on their experiences. NABJs Shark Battle Commence the battle. Youve watched the hit TV show; now join NABJ’s journ-preneur challenge in Boston. Join former President Kathy Times of WhereToGo411 and a team of mentors who will help you to realize your entrepreneurial dreams. This opportunity is open to about 12 members. Information will be posted by April 30. (Advance registration will be required) Covering Nelson Mandela NABJ will offer an opportunity for African journalists to discuss the recent coverage of the death of Nelson Mandela, the revered anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Bridging the Generational Gap/ Use of the N-Word This panel explores all angles of the N-Word controversy, especially the use of the word in sports. The NFL has considered banning the word, resulting in 15-yard penalties. Google for Media Boot Camp Google is working with NABJ in 2014 to provide a series of in-depth workshops, encouraging best practices and teaching skill using tools such as advance search, Google Trends, Google Maps and Google Earth. These hands-on demos are designed to take reporting to more dynamic heights. Stellar Film Offerings Finding Samuel Lowe, a documentary on the search for an ancestor of NABJ member and former NBC executive Paula Madison; Contradiction, a film that explores the historical and cultural context of religion; and in the coming weeks please watch this page for an exciting announcement of a feature film which will be shown at NABJ Boston on Aug. 2.
