Rhododendron Gardens Stroll - Sun., June 23 Join the N.C. High Peaks Trail Association for a leisurely stroll through the rhododendron garden at Roan Mountain this Sunday, June 23. Roan is famous for its dazzling display of colors, and the plants should be around their peak. Meet at the Burnsville Town Square at 1 p.m. We will ride in a Yancey County Transportation van for a fee of $5 per person, plus an entry fee of $1 per person at Roan Mountain. Hikers may take their own vehicles if they choose, but will pay a $3 per vehicle entry fee at Roan Mountain. If you drive, you can either meet at Town Square or go directly to Roan and wait at the parking area by the public bathrooms at the Gardens, about a mile past the entry gate on the left. The van should arrive there about 2 p.m. The drive to Roan takes about an hour, and the stroll of about one mile will take about an hour. The van should return us to the Town Square by around 4 p.m. For more information check the High Peaks website at highpeaks.org or email hike leader Mike Williams at mikew3000@gmail or call him at 675-9384.
