Rice Straw: For the colleagues who were talking about catastrophic health and environmental impacts of burning rice straw. In addition to hundereds of applications worldwide for using rice straw, I would like to show them two issues: 1. Couple of years ago, together with SEKEM this house was built using imported Chinese rise straw panles. This house is located near to Cairo Airport on Cairo-Ismailia Highy Way. Anyone can visit it. 2. I thought why not to encourage couple of investors to start such a business in Egypt and I contacted one of the old companies in UK. This was the reply with no comment (they had a factory in Egypt in the 1950s): ------------------------------------------------ Dear Dr Sewilam We thank you for your interest in strawboard production in connection with Egypt. Yes, we are very familiar with Egypt, and the particular problem you mention of rice straw burning in the Cairo area. Among other things we have built a model Stramit house near the Nile in South Cairo. The groundwork has been done showing that Stramit production in Egypt should be a successful business.
