Richards Ramblings for January 11, 2015 Since this is the first Richards Ramblings of 2015, allow me to wish you a Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. We certainly did at Spirit of the Cross. I hope you will continue the good start to the new year by being in church this Sunday at 11 a.m. This Sunday, January 11, is Baptism of the Lord Sunday. Its a day where the great majority of churches throughout the world remember the most famous baptism ever. Not only do we remember the dramatic baptism of Jesus but we also reflect on the meaning of our baptism and its implications for the rest of our lives. Baptism is a ritual that all Christians since the time of Jesus have experienced. No matter the era of time, the language, the culture, the denomination . . . and no matter if you were sprinkled or immersed . . . baptism is one of those things that we all hold in common. All Christians are baptized. EVERYONE! It must mean something. My sermon is entitled, A Muddy Reminder and is based on the Gospel text of Mark 1:4-11. Bring somebody with you. Baptism is serious business. However, we are human and whenever and wherever humanity is involved, funny things are bound to happen. Being in church since I was two weeks old and after 22+ years in overall pastoral ministry, I have a few funny stories about baptisms. But I have nothing as funny as the following YouTube video.
