Today at 2:00 AM It was insinuated in Chief of Staff Colby Coppers Statement released to the media on Wednesday at 4:41PM, that I crossed the line when I requested investigative reports from Mayor Stimpson regarding an automobile accident the Interim Fire Chief was involved with while driving a city vehicle. A copy of that request was forwarded to Council Attorney Jim Rossler for him to determine if I crossed the line In making my request to the Mayor. His response is attached below for your review. Mr. Cooper also alluded to how careful the Council should be in not crossing the line of interfering with day to day operations and administrative functions of the City of Mobile. I say to Mr. Cooper, as long as this Council does not direct city employees or instruct or advise the Mayor in the performance of his duties, we are not interfering. It is our duty and responsibility to investigate any aspect of the city we deem necessary and appropriate, without the need of consent or approval from the administration. We also have power to subpoena, should that becomes necessary. We have our own attorney to advise us on legal matters. I merely requested standard reports from Mayor Stimpson involving a city employee, before 8:00AM yesterday, so that I would be armed with facts when questioned by the media about this incident. As of this very moment, I have not heard a word from the Mayors office in regards to my request. The media however, was provided information about the same incident. The following is a statement attributable to Chief of Staff Colby Cooper: “Today, Councilman Fred Richardson sent an email to the Mayor inquiring about an automobile accident involving a City Employee. A copy of that email, before the Mayor or I could read it or respond to it, was also sent to the media. “The administration is looking into the facts of this accident and the policy/procedures that were followed in its aftermath, and will handle appropriately once all the facts are known. “The City Council needs to be very careful that it does not cross the line of interfering with the day to day operations and administrative functions of the City of Mobile. The City Council has the right to inquiry, but when inquiries are sent to the media with insinuations and implications about the good name and character of city employees, it crosses the line.” George Talbot Senior Director of Communications and External Affairs
