Richmond Mutumbami snub Tuskers: Tuskers players get contracts THIRTEEN Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise players were yesterday given contracts ahead of the season’s opener against Mashonaland Eagles in a fortnight. According to a source, the shortlisted players met the Matabeleland Tuskers chief executive officer Stanley Staddon, coach Wayne James and captain Sean Williams at Queens Sports Club. The players were given contracts to study over the weekend. “The players have been given contracts and they were told that they should study them and return them on Monday. Each player went into Staddon’s office to negotiate his contract with the coach and in the presence of captain (Williams). What I can tell you is that there are no major changes to the squad,” said the source. The only players from last season’s squad that did not attend yesterday’s meeting are hard-hitting Charles Coventry, pace bowler Glenn Querl who was cleared to bowl by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after undergoing remedial work during the offseason and Keegan Meth who is in Canada. Coventry and Querl are said to have signed contracts with clubs in Bangladesh and Dubai and will only be available to Matabeleland Tuskers in January. Some of the players that have been given contracts include all-rounder Keith Dabengwa, spin bowler John Nyumbu, seamer Njabulo “Papa” Ncube, promising opening batsman Brian Chari who spent the better part of the offseason at ZC Academy in Harare, Bradley Staddon and rookie Goodwill Mamhiyo who played winter cricket in England. Former national team pace bowler Tawanda Mupariwa who was with Masvingo’s Southern Rocks last season is also another player sources said was seen going into Staddon’s office yesterday for possible contract talks. It was not clear whether last season’s skipper Gavin Ewing was also presented with a contract. Matabeleland Tuskers coach James could not be drawn into revealing the players that he had offered contracts but confirmed that he gave the players documents to study over the weekend. “To be honest with you 13 players have been offered contracts but it is not proper for me to disclose their names when they have not yet put pen to paper. Call me on Monday and I will be having finer details as to which player has agreed to the terms and conditions that we have offered them,” said James. It seems Matabeleland Tuskers have given up on national team and Manicaland Mountaineers’ wicketkeeper Richmond Mutumbami who has not responded to their offer. James said he has cover for Mutumbami. The Matabeleland Tuskers coach also let slip that Christopher Mpofu has been offered a contract. “Chris wants to go to Australia and while he is waiting for a visa he will be playing for us and once he gets it, then we will lose him. “I am looking forward to our first game against Mashonaland Eagles and I believe the boys are also hungry to get on the field and play cricket,” said James.
