Rickmansworth Athletic 2- 3 West Herts AET Challenge Cup. With 35 places seperating these two sides, a premier division side vs a division 4 side, you would have been forgiven for thinking the hosts could end up on the wrong end of a rout. How wrong you would have been! In fact, even tho the home side had 4 regulars missing for this cup tie, they were by far the greater team for the majority of the game, and would have won the game if the opposing linesman was not flag happy with a number of dubious offside descions. The home side started brightly , continuing there brilliant form , racing out of the blocks, peppering the oppositions goal. And after some superb defending , they were rewarded when the hosts went into the half time interval with a 1-0 lead , after a defence splitting through ball from Nicky Thomas, Simon Lee does what he does best, shrugging off the challenging defender, drilling it neatly into the corner. It nearly got better from the home side , Scott Reeves blazing over after some superb play from Jordan Allen and Nicky Thomas with Steve Quarry then coming agonisingly close with a header. The second half started the same as the home side came out buzzing after going 1 up. But it was not to stay that way as the visitors clawed back into the game after some great end to end stuff, after some confusion at the back . After attacking down the wing, the cross came in, and the attacker pounced between two defenders to nod home. The visitors didnt stop there , with the second coming shortly after . Some fantastic defending from Matt OMahoney ,Steve Quarry and Jamie Exley, the ball squirmed out to and opposing player , with a first time pass , resulting in the ball ending up in the back of the net. The hosts then stepped up another gear. They threw everything at them. Confidence growing they smelt blood. Tasty tackles flying in everywhere, chances galore and finally they were rewarded when after some great pressure from Simon Lee , teed up Scott reeves , who buried the ball home and the team went wild.A fully deserved equaliser! Extra time was next. Once again it was the hosts who looked like scoring again. However against the run of play, the striker wriggled through and poked home the goal which proved to be the winner. Rickmansworth Athletic battled in vain to get back on level terms but it wasnt to be , a cruel result for them as they deserved the victory and this will be hard. A great match to watch as a neutral , with the spectators wondering who was the Premier side and who was the side in division 4. M.O.M Jamie Exley Next fixture: Herts Athletic (Home) county cup
