Ricky Tannar and Ryan Weaver to perform at the HHC Southern Heritage Festival Oct 18-19 The Hernando Heritage Council, a division of the Citrus County Historical Society, is planning our annual Southern Heritage Festival and Old Fashioned Cattle Drive on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, 2013. This event is a major fundraiser for our group which uses the money raised to restore the Historic Hernando School located at the intersection of Hwy 486 and US 41 in Hernando, FL. We have hopes of one day converting the historic schoolhouse into a museum and community hall which can be enjoyed by all residents. The weekend of our festival begins early Friday with an old-fashioned cattle drive. Horse riders whom wish to join the cattle drive will meet near the Marion county line with their horses and begin to drive cattle south until they reach the site of the Historic School on Saturday afternoon. The group will stop to rest around lunchtime where horses can drink water and eat and the group will enjoy a lunch. That evening, the group will camp out on the ranch of Charlie Strange. They will enjoy dinner there and breakfast the following morning before continuing on the cattle drive. The Southern Heritage Festival will begin on the historic school grounds on Saturday at 10am. This year’s festival will include our famous Cracker Café with the addition of an old-fashioned general store which will sell jarred, canned, and frozen foods that have been prepared by deep-rooted, citrus county families. The event will also include a group known as “the Hole in the Head Gang.” This group educates the public on the customs of the old west and performs a good ole’ gun fight for the crowd to enjoy throughout the day. Numerous other vendors and demonstrators will be on hand. The cattle drive will arrive between 12 noon and 1:30pm at the festival and we will again hold both a live and a silent auction. This year, we have added a concert series which will begin at 1:30pm with opening act Ricky Tannar and will then be headlined by Nashville Recording Artist, Ryan Weaver, who will perform from 3-4:30pm. The festival will end at 5pm. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than any in the past. Entry to the event is free however, donations are welcomed. Guaranteed seating at the concert will cost $15 in advance and VIP Seating will cost $20. In order to make the event a successful fundraiser, it is necessary to reach out to our community for donations. Physical donations are needed for the auction, Sponsorships packages are available for monetary donations and volunteers are always needed for time donation at the event Our group would appreciate any assistance you could give us with our event and because we are a 501c non-profit organization, we can provide you with documentation which can be used for tax purposes. Recent donations have enabled the HHC to strip the old schoolhouse of all asbestos on the outside of the building and prime it. We have also been able to purchase paint and have started painting. We have also used past donations to complete the restoration of the interior restrooms and stage areas as well as gutting the other areas in preparation for more extensive restoration. Tours of current renovated areas will be given at the festival.
