Riddle me this. I have an acquaintance from Edinburgh who has lived on both sides of the border, and said its due to his socialist principles that hes leaning towards voting No. He claimed that post-devolution Scotland is already in charge of many sectors, and that voting Yes is essentially voting for the SNPs less-than-leftist financial policies; he said hes concerned that Scotland will lose its socialist values with a Yes vote. I was very struck by his line of thinking, because I couldnt imagine how voting No (essentially voting for the reification of institutions that are the hallmark of imperialistic capitalism) could possibly contribute to the health of Scotlands values, whatever those might be. BC members, in your personal experiences, how has partisanship affected how Scots understand the Yes campaign, among both Yes and No voters? I expressed to this acquaintance that I hope a Yes vote will encourage people with ideas other than those proposed by the SNP to come out and become more civically involved after the referendum. Do folks generally see the referendum still as an SNP initiative, or as a broader, supra-partisan movement?
