Riddles! Some months have 30 days, some months have 31 days, but how many months have 28 days? I am been teaching some of my middle school speech kids that in speech the process is more important than the answer and I dont always have an answer key and we wont know if we got a problem right until we all work together to convince each other or it. This is a really hard concept and process for them (and really counter intuitive to how a lot of school works) so I am currently torturing them with riddles. The first one was: Some months have 30 days, some months have 31 days, but how many months have 28 days. They are learning to listen to each others answers and to expect me to be asking: why, why not, do you agree, how do you know? It is torture! So of course, I am constantly giggling. LOL. No one got it, by the way. But, they did get better at working as a team and also spent genuine time afterwords deciding how the wording of the riddle was tricky. And I got to re-emphasize: the process is more important than the answer. Right now, they work quickly and wildly towards a right answer that they only recognize as correct if provided by an authority. When I say in speech - we have to be confident of the answer BEFORE we look at it - they have no idea what to do. I want them to buy into the concept and that has been pretty hit and miss. I think the riddles are helping a lot. Another tool in my tool box!
