Right as Im falling asleep, the pigs start squealing. This is a regular thing throughout the night. One rolls over and smushes another, or whatever, and they squeal a few times but it never lasts long. Tonight they kept squealing, and it sounded like all of them. Not a bloodcurdling squeal telling me, and everyone nearby, A coyote has me, help me! So I wasnt too worried, but I get out of bed to check on them. Cant find my flashlight, so I just yell at them from the back porch. That doesnt stop them, now Im a little worried. I run back to my room, find my best dim flashlight, run to the porch, flash and yell in their direction again. This time I see eyes looking back at me. Worry level hits about 6, its either the pigs, the yaks, or coyotes. I had to go get the .22. Back on the front porch, fire a shot into the ground. The pigs stop squealing. The eyes are still looking back at me. I decide to go out there. I have to go grab my boots, a shirt, and pants, because its freezing and Im in my boxers. I run out there, yelling and keeping my flashlight pointed towards the eyes(not the rifle, which was held with care, I know my gun safety). The pigs come running to me, I count 7 out of the 8. And the eyes are still staring at me... But Im close enough to see that these beasts are tall, not coyotes, but yaks. Thank goodness. The boar was missing, but he has found a new spot in the yak barn he likes to hang out without his comrades. False alarm, the pigs that cried coyote have wasted an hour of my time to sleep, making me run through the house half naked, wake everybody in the house up, freeze, and write this long Facebook post. Anybody want pork tomorrow? #lifeofafarmer
