Right, back home again. This is St Catherines island with the fort - TopicsExpress

Right, back home again. This is St Catherines island with the fort that was built to deter the French from invading Tenby sitting on the top. Actually, the British built loads of forts on the Southern coast of England and Wales as the threat was that great at the time, and their pupose was to defend the naval dockyards. Started in 1867 it was completed three years later at a total cost of £40000. Designed by Colonel William Jervois who eventually became Governor of South Australia in 1877 and then New Zealand in 1882, it had a garrison of soldiers who knew how to fire cannons and other stuff. At the turn of the century it became a private residence for some rich fella who was involved in the Iron and Coal industry, and after it changed hands a couple more times it then became a zoo in 1968 until it closed in 79. Since then it has mostly been closed to the public. So; why am I telling you all this? Well apart from trying to educate you all a little bit, this weekend on the island is a party. Yes thats right, a PARTY! The new owner has decided to open his doors for a one off event. Once the tide drops back there will be 4 hours of drinking, merriment and more drinking, before we all have to get off the island before the tide comes back around again. Starts at 9 pm and then with torches aglow we will all proceed back through the darkness back to the mainland. The last big party on St. Catherines was 37 years ago, (though I missed that one as I was only 10.) I aint missing this one.
