Right-o Tim Gillman lets look at your citation, with is a response letter to an earlier piece. And I have to say asking questions is the sign of intelligence. However your citation is filled with bunk presented by idiots. [They say that measles is a deadly disease. But it’s not] Except that it is right up there with smallpox which we eradicated with the vaccine. They raise the good point that in developing nations its more of an issue but in developed nations the fatality rate is 1:1000 which doesnt sound like a big deal except this disease is highly infectious. Add to this odds of encephalitis with brain damage at 1:1000, odds of phenomena at 1:33, and odds of deafness and blindness youll see why this disease which once affected THE ENTIRE POPULATION was feared. And more interesting is how since the Walkfield scare and MMR rates dropped in Europe there were measles related fatalities vs the US with a higher immunization rate there were not. The vaccine has adverse reactions in less than 1:1,000,000 injection, none of them as serious as wild type measles but presume they were were talking about a factor of 2000x improvement for measles alone. [They say that chickenpox is a big deal. But it’s not.] It may be one of the milder of the childhood diseases but the fatality rate dropped 90% since deploying the vaccine in those under 20. Further their risk of long term complications. The same people will support pox parties and they indeed represented a valued harm reduction strategy before the vaccine. But this too would be vaccination. Now were only talking a body count of 100 from chickenpox per year before the vaccine, but fewer dead and fewer instances of Shingles is not a bad thing. [They say the flu is dangerous. But it’s not.] Except when it is which is the whole bloody issue in the first place. Often times these people confuse the cold with the Flu. [They say the vaccine prevents whooping cough. But it doesn’t] Except that it does and we can look no further than Vashon Island for that. 1% of King Countys population and over 20% of the pertussis cases with the key difference being immunization rates. Now vs MMR the pertussis vaccine didnt result in the same level of drop in morbidity. Measles dropped 99% and pertussis only 98%. Japan 1974 were concerned about their use of DTP causing febrile seizures. They delayed DTP to 2 years vs 6 months. They discovered the rates of SIDS cases didnt drop, but the rates of pertussis increased. Since that time they developed the vaccine we use today, DTaP which is a good deal safer. Not quite as good as the whole cell version. [They give credit to vaccines for eradicating diseases] This is just bunk since we KNOW polio incidents actually ROSE before the deployment of the vaccine. Now what these people do is look at mortality rates, how many dead children. Sure there were fewer dead children, but more children stuck in iron lungs. Iron Lungs saved lives but it doesnt mean polio was going away, far from it. In the big scheme of things polio was only a mild killer. Only 5% who were infected showed any symptoms at all, and a small fraction of those below 1% experienced serious complications near .1% and .1% IIRC. But this disease scared the living hell out of parents because there was no way to tell if a child was infected who could infect another child and cause serious problems. Parents kept kids indoors in the summer because polio was more common in the summer. The oral polio vaccine is virtually bullet proof against polio and only had adverse reactions in .0001333% of doses. Sure measles was LESS fatal than it was 1890-1930 but we learned much about treating it. We developed antibiotics which are indicated when your immune system is depressed with flipping measles. [They say vaccination is better than “natural infection.”] Okay here is where there is a grain of truth. There IS a difference between the current pertussis vaccine and wild type pertussis. There is a correlation between risk and duration of immunity. The difference IIRC is about 8 years. Pertussis immunity isnt life long so thats a bold faced lie. Its also not a virus. There is likely a difference between wild type polio and the current vaccine used in the US. But we have the oral polio vaccine which is so close it makes no odds. Measles with 3 shots immunity AFAIK is lifelong. They say that vaccines have been rigorously tested for safety and are subjected to a higher level of scrutiny than any other medicine Which they are. Theres VAERS which you can report anything associated with the vaccine and its investigated. [They say vaccines are safe. But they’re not.] But they largely are. Yes the old DTP vaccine was associated with febrile seizures. Not a good thing, but no evidence of long term harm was associated with it. Oral polio vaccine isnt used anymore either but yeah roughly 8 children per year got Vaccine Attributed Polio Paralysis. This is serious and unfortunate but nothing compared to 10,000 children per year some of whom needed iron lungs because they couldnt breath, some became permanently paralyzed, disfigured, or have some chronic health problem. [They say MMR doesn’t cause autism.] And it doesnt. cid.oxfordjournals.org/content/48/4/456.full.pdf+html [They say thimerosal in vaccines doesn’t cause autism, but it might.] No, we removed thimerosal from vaccines and the ASD went up. Only one childhood vaccine has it, and thats SOME multidose flu vaccine vials. [They say a child gets more exposure to aluminum in breast milk and that aluminum is safe] And this is totally true. Aluminium makes up the bulk of the earths crust and youll find the same aluminium salts in among other things DIRT. Your exposure is so much greater breathing in dirt than is in any vaccine, not to speak of skinning your knee. [Aluminum is classified as a hazardous substance] No it isnt. You can get aluminium salts in antacids. [They say unvaccinated children put vaccinated children at risk.] Which is largely true. All measles outbreaks with the exception of 1 was started by a nonvaccinated child. All pertussis outbreaks can be associated with higher vaccine exception rates. Outbreaks can be predicated by the availability of Whole Foods. [They say vaccine herd immunity exists] And it does. Take MMR for measles. If you have measles and your friend doesnt and isnt immunized the odds are pretty much 100% theyll get it. But with a 90% effective vaccine a bystander 90% chance of not getting measles. A bystander to them who is vaccinated 99%. A bystander to them 99.9%, 99.99%, 99.999%. At some point measles cant live without a host and the general population is protected. https://youtube/watch?v=f-cKzzPkz2o Anyways I think thats enough bunk addressed.
