Riley, Roosevelt, and Vermont Elementary Schools presented the Outstanding Student, Parent, and Employee Awards in May 2013. Each of the honorees contributes to the District’s goals of maintaining safe, respectful, and welcoming environments and high expectations for student and staff performance. Riley Elementary School 1266 North G Street, San Bdno. Aldo Ramirez, principal Saulo Chavarria is an Outstanding Student Award winner from Amanda Lower’s class at Roosevelt Elementary School. He excels in all subject areas, including music. Saulo played the national anthem at Riley’s promotion ceremony. His success in academics and the arts comes from his hard work and his love of school. Saulo plans to attend college and become a marine biologist. As a first grader, Omar Hernandez demonstrated the type of behavior and academic success that will take him far in school. He scored at the advanced level on both math and English/language arts standardized tests. He reads more than 60 words per minute and knows more than 300 words that frequently appear in everyday writing. Omar is also very kind, making him a model student and an Outstanding Student Award winner. Brianna Medina was the vice president of her third-grade class and the winner of the Outstanding Student Award. She sets a good example for her peers by attending school every day and completing all of her homework assignments. Brianna mastered English and has transitioned from an English-language learner to a fluent English speaker. She is also skilled at math, having memorized her multiplication tables through 12. Diane Heine is an Outstanding Parent Award winner. She is an asset to the entire Riley Elementary community. Her patience and dedication to helping students are an inspiration to the staff. Her devotion to her daughter provides an excellent example for students and parents, especially since Heine’s daughter is not a Riley student but a Riley Elementary teacher. Violet Preszler is a curriculum clerk and an Outstanding Classified Employee. Her co-workers appreciate her positive attitude, kind heart, and dedication to her job. Riley students benefit from her organized and timely work, which makes it possible for each student to have all the classroom materials. Second-grade teacher Christine Perry-Hill is Riley’s Outstanding Certificated Employee. She is an enthusiastic teacher who builds lasting relationships with her students and their parents. She truly cares about all Riley students. As the CAPS lead teacher, she has helped create an educational and exciting after-school program that benefits hundreds of Riley students every year. Roosevelt Elementary School 1554 N. Garner Ave., San Bdno. Martha Servin, principal Kevin Aday is a gifted student and an Outstanding Student Award winner. He skipped a grade to enter Sarah Emerson’s third-grade GATE class. Despite being a year younger than his classmates, Kevin was at the top of the class. He is curious and motivated to learn. He loves to read and is interested in science. Kevin wants to graduate from college with a degree in mechanical engineering or medicine. Outstanding Student Martha Canela is a role model for her classmates. She is considerate, respectful, and well mannered. Martha is also a disciplined student, taking responsibility for her own learning. She has made progress in her English-language development, advancing from an Intermediate to an Early Advanced level. Martha is considering a career as a music teacher or a news reporter. Osvaldo Rodarte is an advanced reader and an Outstanding Student Award winner. He reads at a sixth-grade level even though he only recently completed fourth grade. He can usually be found reading a book from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, when he isn’t doing class work or playing chess. Osvaldo dreams of attending Harvard, becoming a pediatrician, and working at Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Outstanding Parent Award winner Fanny Nieto is a welcome and frequent visitor to Roosevelt Elementary School. She volunteers countless hours at the school, making her a valued member of the community and a role model for other parents. Nieto’s children, Yuliana and Andrea, can be proud of her accomplishments. Fourth-grade teacher Gilbert Rodriguez is an Outstanding Certificated Employee. He holds high expectations for all students, helping them become independent, lifelong learners. Rodriguez also holds high expectations for himself. He attends professional development and training sessions to make sure he is up-to-date on the latest teaching strategies so his students receive the best education possible. Materials Clerk Daphne Card is Roosevelt’s Outstanding Classified Employee. She is a conscientious employee who goes out of her way to make a positive difference at the school. Card is always willing to improve her skills and challenge herself by taking on new projects. In addition to her regular job duties, Card has helped with the school carnival and Back-to-School Night, and she has chaperoned Saturday fieldtrips for CAPS (Creative Before- and Afterschool Programs for Success). Vermont Elementary School 3695 Vermont St., San Bdno. Ana Maria Perez, principal Third grader Eliza Rodriguez Campos is an Outstanding Student Award winner. She is a high achiever, scoring proficient or above in both language arts and math. She is a determined and self-motivated learner, making her a good role model for her peers. Eliza wants to attend college and become an oncologist. Her ultimate goal is to find a cure for cancer. Erika Campos-Calleros is an Outstanding Student from Kerri Valenzuela’s class. She is a focused, dedicated student. She shows good character, valuing the success of others as much as her own. Erika wants to study law at Stanford and become an attorney. She even practices being a lawyer when she plays with her siblings. Second-grade teacher Donna Espinoza selected Alan Javier Martinez as an Outstanding Student Award winner. Alan goes beyond what is required to challenge himself in every subject. After memorizing the multiplication tables required for second grade, he memorized additional multiplication tables. When he earned an atlas as a class prize, Alan memorized all 50 states. Alan wants to graduate from college and become president of the United States of America. Rosa Loera earned Vermont’s Outstanding Parent Award. She is one of the most involved parents at Vermont. Loera is very involved in her children’s education, frequently volunteering in their classrooms. She is also a member of the School Site Council, the English Learner Advisory Committee, and the Parent-Teacher Organization. This makes her an important member of the Vermont Elementary community. Kaelon Kroft is Vermont’s custodian and an Outstanding Classified Employee. His co-workers admire his drive and commitment and the students like and respect him because they know Kroft cares. He goes beyond his regular duties and work hours to make sure the school is clean and safe for every student. He supports the school’s Food for Families Distribution and the Fall Carnival. Kroft is a vital member of the Vermont Elementary School team. Donna Espinoza is Vermont Elementary School’s Outstanding Certificated Employee. She is Vermont’s biggest cheerleader and supporter. She works with administrators and staff to help all students advance academically. After a day of teaching, Espinoza often volunteers her own time to plan events for parents and students. She is famous for the rallies and assemblies she plans to keep staff and students motivated to achieve.
