Rio calls for change in food habits State chief minister Neiphiu Rio Wednesday said there was an urgent need for change in food habits of the people of the state and appealed the citizens to reduce consumption of resources besides re-examining the choice of food and food habits to become environments friendly. Rio was speaking on the occasion of World Environment Day Tuesday at NBCC Convention Hall Kohima as the chief guest held under the theme “Think.Eat.Save”. The chief minister lamented that there was a degradation of forests in the state due to large scale shifting cultivation, mining, indiscriminate feeling of trees, poaching and killing of wildlife. Stating that though jhum cultivation was the way for life in Nagaland, Rio said one way of mitigating the adverse impact of jhum cultivation was planting of trees on the vast stretches of jhum areas providing livelihood to the village communities. Rio lauded NBCC for taking a resolution on initiating climate change adaptation strategies during 2012 platinum jubilee and said churches could really make a difference. Stating that the recent wanton trapping, killings and marketing for meat of the migratory bird Amur Falcon have given a negative image of the Nagas, Rio acknowledged the rural development department for issuing circular to all VDBs with regard to the issue. He said if villagers resorted to such practice during bird migration season, VDB/NREGA grants to the village would not be released till the culprits were identified and booked.
