Rip Matt Unkles Words for Matt Today, our hearts are temporarily broken, as we say farewell, to our friend and brother, Matt. I’ve known Matt for the better part of 30 years. I see this as a great honor and I am privileged to call him my mate. We were at primary school and secondary school together and we have remained close friends since that time. Since learning of Matt’s passing, many thoughts and memories have played on my mind. I remember all the camping trips our families spent together when we were much younger. I remember the competitive sports rivalries in not only footy, cricket and basketball, but every single sport Matt played. I remember staying up to all hours talking absolute rubbish, about things that simply made no sense, but they always made us laugh. And if you could get Matty on a roll laughing, it really was something special. We watched and recited funny movies, seeing which of us could do the best impersonations. All these memories and so many more, racing through my mind. But above all, a lingering phrase has kept repeating over and over… “True heroes are with us always”. When we think of heroes in our lives, especially when we’re younger, they’re often celebrities or fictitious characters. No matter who they are, they all hold values, principles and qualities that we all look up to and often wish we had. For me, Matty is no different. He possessed so many of the great qualities that one can hope to have, as a son, a brother, a partner and a friend. He was courageous, strong, determined and humble. He had a relentless optimism and strength in character that could transform your day, just by his mere presence. Since I have known Matt, he has never once cared for what people say or think about him, he’s never really cared for material possessions. And he certainly has never cared that greatly for money. Which is ironic, because holding these values has made him one of the richest people I know. As time goes on in life and we all get older. We start to learn about what’s really important in life. After speaking with Matt intently over the course of the last 2-3 years, it occurred to me that he seemed to know a lot of these key secrets a long time ago, as far back to when we were just kids. “Family and friends” reign supreme on many peoples list of importance. And Matt was no exception. We would talk at lengths about his passion for life and all it has to offer, we would talk about sport, about girls, about our families and our friends. I can say with all assurance, that the love and respect Matt had as a son for Marie and Jim, a brother to Dave, Karina, Elise and Shane, and as a partner to Christina and they’re dog Kya, all came from the strongest heart that any man could hope to have. I’d like to thank Christina personally. Witnessing Matt with his heart filled with love for you, was such a beautiful thing. The sheer mention of your name, would literally leave him speechless. He would close his eyes, bow his head slightly and just gently nod. As in disbelief that he had your love in his world. He was blessed to have you in his life, and so are we. Nothing more needed to be said about such a beautiful woman. I’ll miss so many things about you Matty. Your dry, quick sense of humor, along with your stunning ability to call it as you see it. Your loving and sincere nature toward all those you knew. And lastly, your horrible jokes that ran in seamlessly with mine. Your legacy and passion for living every day to it’s fullest, dreaming out loud and living the life you love, will continue to inspire everyone you have touched, throughout your short, but wonderful life. I love you Matty. Until we laugh again old friend, farewell.
