Risky Business It was a conversation Alan never thought he’d be having with his friend. Phoebe was young, bright, talented—and suddenly unemployed. The layoff happened yesterday. Now they were sitting in a coffee shop. She’d always been like a little sister, so he seamlessly slipped into big brother role. “So what do you really want to do?” “Nothing, at least for a few days. I need to let this settle in.” She was in her late thirties and widowed with two children still in grade school. “But what do I really want?” Alan saw a twinkle in her eye. “I want to be on my own. Start my own business. Do you think I have the skill set to do it?” “You know I do.” Alan had been laid off himself when he was 46, and started his own business as a result. Five years later, he loved being successfully self-employed. “This is a great time to take this chance. But are you ready to put your toe out and test those waters? There’s a lot of work, and it’s risky. Nothing’s guaranteed.” Phoebe laughed. “I just learned nothing’s guaranteed in the corporate world. I want to be happy in my work. Besides, I feel this is what God wants me to do.” Sometimes setbacks are just stepping stones to opportunity. Is the Lord asking you to take a risk?
