Rival demos as Egypt marks revolution anniversary Rival demonstrations are expected to be held in Egypt as the country marks the third anniversary of the revolution that toppled former dictator Hosni Mubarak. Supporters and opponents of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, have called for major protests on Saturday. Security forces have already blocked off areas in the capital, Cairo, including the iconic Tahrir Square, ahead of the demonstrations. The Muslim Brotherhood has called for its supporters to take part in demonstrations. The planned protests come only hours after two bomb explosions hit the capital. The first targeted a police institute and the second was carried out in the Qobba Gardens area. On January 24, similar attacks at places including Cairo’s police headquarters and a metro station left at least six people dead and as many as 100 others injured. On January 25, 2011, Egypt became the second Arab country after Tunisia to revolt against its government in a wave of uprisings known as the Islamic Awakening. On February 11 of the same year, Mubarak was deposed. Hundreds of people were killed in the violence. More than a year later on June 30, 2012, Morsi was sworn in as Egypt’s president. However, the country’s first freely-elected president was ousted on July 3, 2013 after anti-government protests were once again held and the country’s military took control. Morsi was replaced by interim President Adly Mansour. Morsi’s removal from power triggered mass protests and deadly clashes between his supporters and security forces.
