River Road Reopened!! Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge in Bibb County, Ala., has improved River Road and will open the road to visitors on August 27. River Road was rehabilitated for easier and safer access to the refuge by addressing constant erosion issues. Refuge crews improved River Road by replacing lost road base and gravel, stabilizing the riverbank, and addressing the many areas where water crosses the road frequently. “We hope that visitors enjoy the improvements and find access safer.” said Refuge Manager Sarah Clardy. Many refuge visitors use this road for fishing and as put-in and take-out points for canoes, kayaks and other small boats. The concrete launch site has been cleared of sediment to allow improved access to the river for launching small boats. The riverbank has also been stabilized in key areas to prevent further erosion. River Road remains a narrow, single lane road with parking pull-overs along many stretches. Visitors will need to continue to drive slowly and carefully. The refuge also asks visitors not to litter on the refuge or to help the refuge keep the area clean by picking up a bit of trash during their visit. “This is one of the most beautiful places in Alabama and it breaks my heart to see people littering the refuge.” said Clardy.
