River otter have been seen after 17 years in kodaikanal wild life - TopicsExpress

River otter have been seen after 17 years in kodaikanal wild life sanctuary. This otter was seen in check dam which was constructed during this May month. Upper area of this check dam one swamp is there. This swamp had been invaded by wattle. Wattle was removed by Vattakanal Trust during 2006-07. After that water flow was improved. This year I prepared water management plan for mitigating man-animal in kodaikanal sanctuary. In that plan I mentioned that no check dams on the swamp as this would destroy the extraordinary plant diversity of the swamp and check dams could be built below on the stream running down. Based on that this check dam was constructed. Through out the year the water is discharged from the swamp is stored in this check dam. Now about 200 meter length area the water is stored. This stored water may be the habitat to Otter. Any way it is the good sign to see otter by tourists. Because this check dam is situated near Pillar Rock area of Kodaikanal.
