“Road Rage” Traffic Confusion in Westfield WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB)- Are drivers speeding on your street? Are there dangerous crosswalks, round-abouts, or a lack of road signs where you live? We want you to tell us all bout it. Abc40 is launching a new series called “Road Rage.” Brittany Decker will investigate areas across Western Mass. that put your families’ lives in danger. Tonight’s “Road Rage” comes from Courtney Cummings of Westfield. On site we found that many other community members agree with the road confusion downtown. North Elm Street in Westfield is a busy road in the city and one where frequent problems occur. “My office is right in front of the building so I hear beeping all the time and I have witnessed accidents out there,” says Donna Shibley from Pilgrim Candle in Westfield. Drivers we heard from say the road causes plenty of confusion, only the middle lane continues straight. “People who are not familiar with the pattern do not realize that you have to merge over,” Shibley adds. We noticed many cars breaking quickly to move over and when speaking to Westfield’s Department of Public Works, they realize it too. There have been recent changes to the road. On the pavement there’s a faint curved line which is now changed to a straight long for better traffic flow. But this didn’t solve all of the problems here. In fact, it made the intersection ahead even worse. “When the line painting contractor straightened out this intersection, they put a couple extra skip lines at the next intersection and that’s causing confusion now,” says Deputy Superintendent of the Westfield DPW, Casey Berube. It’s what’s forcing cars into the left lane. For now, the DPW has blackened the lines allowing for the option to go straight or to turn. However, there will be a permanent fix.
