Robin Williams was diagnosed with two conditions: Depression and Parkinsons disease. He was taking two SSRIs (antidepressants or ADs). A week before his death by suicide, he started taking a drug for his Parkinsons symptoms...an atypical antipsychotic (AT or neuroleptic) called Seroquel. Why Seroquel? IDK. Treatment of Parkinsons is not an approved use for Seroquel or any neuroleptic. (Not that AstraZeneca is averse to off-label Rxing. In fact, theyve made big bucks doing just that.) At age 63, he was arguably elderly. Seroquel carries increased risk of suicide warnings (as do the two ADs he was taking) AND a warning not to use on elderly patients due to increased risk of death in patients with dementia-related psychosis. Wait. SSRIs and neuroleptics can induce suicide. SSRIs and ATs can trigger psychosis. Parkinsons disease can cause dementia and psychosis. Does anyone see any problems here?
