Rochester Resilience Project Rated ‘Promising’ for Improving Social-Emotional and Behavioral Skills The goal of the Rochester Resilience Project was to prevent mental health problems and substance abuse by teaching young children social–emotional and behavioral skills. The program targeted children who were identified through a population-based screening of all kindergarten through third graders in two urban schools in Rochester, NY, as having problems in at least two of the following domains: behavioral, social–emotional, or on-task learning behaviors at school. After assessing the available evidence, the CrimeSolutions.gov team rated the program as “Promising” on social-emotional and behavior skill improvement. In particular, one evaluation outcome showed that 1.8 percent of the children in the treatment group were suspended compared with 6.1 percent of the control group. The “Promising” rating means there is some evidence to show the practice had overall positive effects, but the effects were mixed or not large enough for the practice to earn an “Effective” rating.
