Roderick. K. Newlands- About the artist: Born Aberdeen, Scotland. Roderick. K. Newlands graduated from the ‘Royal College of Art’ in 1978 and has been practicing as a professional artist since 1974. In 1979 Newlands was awarded a fellowship to ‘Cheltenham College of Art.’ Newlands exhibits both nationally and internationally and has exhibited at the Royal Summer Academy shows and Royal Scottish Academy exhibitions on a number of occasions. Newlands has won two major awards from the Royal Scottish Academy. He was based in Norfolk from 1980 lecturing at both Yarmouth and Norwich Schools of art. He was course leader and tutor of the Foundation studies course at ‘Norwich School of art and design’ between 1989 and 2006. Newlands is currently based in Cyprus where he is developing works in response to the island and he continues to exhibit internationally. Personal Statement: Newlands painting concerns have evolved from a long term interest in ‘Abstract Surrealism.’ The ambiguous nature of the imagery is evocative of organic, mechanical and architectural forms existing in “an other” space. Newlands believes that there are pivotal life experiences which root themselves in our psyche and play a major role in our image making processes in the constant seeking out of appropriate visual vehicle. Newlands sites memories of his childhood, assisting his father (agricultural engineer) mending “monstrous, mechanical contraptions” situated in a dark barn with only a hand held torch for source of light. Later experiences of the oil industries intrusion upon the Scottish landscape and culture made a great psychological influence in the development of his work. Recent works are reflective of Newlands experiences living on the island of Cyprus.
