Romans 14:5 “One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.” Some people use this verse to have Sabbath on a Saturday as they think it refers to the Jewish laws and feast days. But this is not so as there is no way that Paul would let the gentiles continue with Jewish celebration days and the Jewish Sabbath. Christ has ransomed us from the law and the Jewish special days have nothing to do with us. Christ is now all in all. Read what Paul writes about the feasts and the Sabbath in Galatians 4:9-11. This has been dealt with – a believer does not live under the Jewish Sabbath law and feasts. Romans 14:5 mentions something else. It seems as if people had a difference of opinion in Paul’s days about these days. Some thought that there must be days that should be more important than others for gentile believers too, like Sunday, Good Friday, the Day of Ascension and Christmas. But others thought that all the days are equal. In this verse Paul does not choose sides. If the days were truly important, wouldn’t Paul have said so here? But he doesn’t. I think it is more a lesson in how believers should respect each other when dealing with unimportant things – not to judge one another about days, as days won’t bring salvation – only Christ. Rather thank God that people believe in Christ and that they are saved. In the same manner should those who do not celebrate special days judge those who do not. Accept each other and allow space for each to practice these celebrations. We belong to the Lord and He has saved us (verse 9). Seek to honor God then you cannot go wrong.
