Romans 7:22-23, “For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.” Paul describes the internal battle that wages within our souls. Within us is a self which desires to live the life of Christ that is purely selfless and honorable, yet there is always an evil impulse that wages war against that self. In Romans, Paul writes about this internal struggle as if there are two persons within him fighting for control. In coming to Christ, Paul links himself with the inmost self that delights in the will and law of God, but the evil impulses that he has disassociated himself from will not concede power. While he desires to do good Paul finds that the impulse to go against God’s will does not relent and he must admit that there is a wretched weakness within him. Yet when he cries out to know who will eventually overcome this evil within him, the answer comes, “God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” This is the reality in which we also live. We desire to live the perfect life as Christ did and find the purity and love he showed very attractive. Yet, while we try to live that life there is also something in us pulling us away from our Lord. There is an internal struggle that we fight and fight wondering when we will be free to live as we desire. Will it ever happen? The answer is yes. Christ will free us from the power of sin in His time. He simply calls us to not to surrender, but persist in our desire to do good and trust in His power to save.
