Rooney takes Swipe at John Terry, Praises Steven Gerrard Ahead of England’s game vs Montenegro, Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has come up with statements full of praise for the captain. He might hate Liverpool but claims that their captain has been one of the best players in the world over the past 15 years. Rooney believes that the Reds star should have been handed the captain’s arm band for the national side earlier. The former Evertonian claimed : “I feel he should have been named captain a bit earlier than that. But he is our captain and leader and he is going to be a really important player for us” As David Beckham stepped down from England’s captaincy after the 2006 World Cup, new manager Steve Mclaren chose Chelsea captain John Terry as the one to lead national side. Not only that, when Mclaren departed and Italian Fabio Capello took over, he also picked Terry as the leader of English side. Understandable that Rooney did not mention Chelsea star’s name, but perhaps he has taken a swipe at John Terry by stating that he thinks Gerrard should have been captain way before and maybe he was the right man to lead England after Beckham.
