Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee introduced H.R. 5648 – United States-Jordan Defense Cooperation Act of 2014, which seeks to improve defense cooperation between the United States and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. H.R. 5648, United States-Jordan Defense Cooperation Act of 2014, is important legislation that: Would streamline defense sales to Jordan aimed at improving defense cooperation between both nations; Supports Jordan in its response to the Syrian refugee crisis; and Urges the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. and Jordan to increase military cooperation and enhance strategic dialogue. “As Congress passes the Continuing Resolution, which includes the Syria amendment, we must seek ways to bolster our economic and military relationships with our allies in the Middle East, including our partner in Jordan. In July, I traveled to Jordan and saw firsthand the threat posed to the Kingdom by extremists and the refugee crisis that has taken a large burden to the Kingdom. Given our current strategy against ISIL in Syria and Iraq, we must ensure that Jordan has the appropriate tools and equipment necessary to protect its borders and foster stability in this volatile region,” stated Ros-Lehtinen.
