Rotary International decorates Aseefa Bhutto Zardari for fight against Polio Islamabad; June 6, 2013: Rotary International has decorated Ms. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, Ambassador for Polio Eradication in Pakistan for her role in fighting polio eradication in Pakistan. “Thanks in large part to your generous participation in the ‘This Close’ public service campaign” said the citation accompanying the commemorative plaque awarded to her adding “we are on the verge of global polio eradication”. The Plaque was presented to Ms. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, on behalf of Rotary International by National Chair of Rotary International Mr. Aziz Memon during a special ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Wednesday. Thanking Ms. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari “on behalf of 1.2 million Rotarians from 200 countries for her role in polio eradication campaigns in the country” Chairman Rotary Foundation Wilfrid J. Wilkinson also expressed hope that she will continue to work for complete eradication of polio from Pakistan and the world. “We rely on your continued support to ensure that polio eradication remains top-of- mind for world leaders, key community stakeholders and the general public” Chairman Rotary Foundation Wilfrid J. Wilkinson said, adding “Your support is critical to ensuring we end polio, once for all”, “Please accept this commemorative plaque as a token of our sincere appreciation, your support has been instrumental in the final push to end this destructive disease”, he said. Ms. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari was the first Pakistani child who was administered polio drops by the Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in 1994 when she launched a determined national bid to end polio from the country. She was appointed Pakistan’s Ambassador for Polio Eradication in the country in 2009 and has been actively engaged in efforts aimed at ending polio from the country. She has been involved in launching polio eradication campaigns in the country, holding meeting with international organizations and dignitaries including Bill Gates, Co-chair of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WHO, UNICEF and speaking at various international events and forums to garner support for the polio eradication campaign in Pakistan. Speaking at international event organized by the Secretary General UN with the help of Gates Foundation and other international partners at the United Nations in New York on the sideline of 67th UNGA session, Ms. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari said that her mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, personally vaccinated her in 1994, an action that inspired the entire nation to embrace polio immunization. She said that her mother dreamed of a new millennium where children were no longer ravaged from this crippling disease, adding that she personally has taken the lead to ensure that every Pakistani child, in our cities, towns and villages is protected from this disease. "I want to make clear, that whatever the odds, we will not be deterred in the polio eradication campaign", Aseefa Bhutto said while speaking at the event
