Rotary: Worlds Greatest Meal to Help End Polio Many of my friends ask why do I keep reminding us so often about the End Polio Now project and how we can help to eliminate this terrible illness. My dear friend and fellow Rotarian Reg Ling, regularly sends me weekly updates - this week I thought I would share this with you on this very special day in India of Independence day. ----------------------------------------------- All, The country reports continue to show that the utmost concern is Pakistan. The reported situations in the polio affected countries were: WPV1 cases in 2014 to date: Four WPV1 cases reported this week, all from Pakistan. 139 WPV1 cases this year compared to 181 at the same time in 2013. 121 cases in the polio endemic countries vs. 71 at the same time last year. Pakistan 108 cases (i.e. 89% of those from the endemc countries) vs. 24 at the same time last year. The most recent case was dated 16 July. Afghanistan 8 cases vs. 4 at the same time last year. The most recent case was on 17 June and the infected child was a refugee from Waziristan in Pakistan. Nigeria 5 cases vs. 43 at the same time last year. The most recent case was dated 27 May. 18 cases in the non-endemic countries vs. 110 at the same time in 2013. Cameroon 5 cases vs. none at the same time last year. The most recent case was dated 9 July. Equatorial Guinea 5 cases this year, the first ones since 1999. The most recent case was dated 3 May. Somalia 4 cases vs. 100 at the same time last year. The most recent case was reported on 3 June. Iraq 2 cases. The first cases since 2000 and related to the virus in Syria. The most recent case was reported on 7 April. Syria 1 case vs. 35 cases in the full year 2013. The case was reported on 21 January. Ethiopia 1 case vs. 9 cases in the full year 2013. This followed the Technical Advisory Groups concern on critical quality gaps in the implementation of the outbreak response. The case was reported on 5 January. cVDPV2 cases: No cases reported this week. The total this year is 34 vs. 62 in the full year 2013. This year the cases have been 16 in Pakistan and 18 in Nigeria. No WPV3 cases have been reported since 10 November 2012. (In Nigeria.) No WPV2 cases have been reported since October 1999. (In Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.) Immunisation campaigns continue in affected countries and in adjacent countries too.
