Round 8 Match Report - vs Gawler Strikers In our final match - TopicsExpress

Round 8 Match Report - vs Gawler Strikers In our final match for Series A of Summer Hockey some of our finest work was left for the hottest day of the season!!!! And given that 5 of our finest (Donna Lehmann, David Kirby, April Hoffmann, Steve & Christine Mardle) were unavailable we played with out subs. It has been proposed that the team does a Dubai Pre-season to lift our fitness ahead of Series B in the New Year. Adrian Hoffmann returned to the team after an unsuccessful scouting trip to South East Asia, with renewed confident in his knee & decision making. He rotated himself through several positions including umpiring and went coast to coast scoring a class of its own goal in the second half. Daniel Saegenschnitter continues to develop skill and knowledge every game as well as creative footwork. He went on to score the best non goal of the season, a decision again queried by Adrian. Gail Kirby resplendent in her Santa Hat ran hard, tackled hard and then scored hard in the first half. The banter & encouragement between Hoffmann siblings was a treat to witness. I wish I could say Sharyn Saegenschnitter rose above this sillyness however the quiet achiever of the team gave as good as she got both on the field and to her siblings & opponents alike. Mary Sheedy has been voted most improved by her peers this season and this week she added a new edge to her game - Enforcer!!!! Her tackling and intercepting was on show and her accidental head butt on the dominant player for the opposition has put her on the Umpires Watch list. Speaking of watch lists, Matt Lehmann managed to find new ways to foul and stop the oppositions run. All was going well for him up forward until Hoffy called him Wide. Apparently it is nothing personal, just a positional strategy up forward!!!! He also donned a Santa hat however looked more No No No than Ho Ho Ho. Richard Sheedy managed to find the defensive circle once or twice but did his best work up forward, including scoring his first goal of the season and the teams first of the match. I must say that his hip and shoulder work on and off the ball continues to be a treat to see. So after a highly competitive first half (2-3 down) the heat and our general lack of fitness or running power impacted the end result. Goal scorers - Richard Sheedy, Gail Kirby, Adrian Hoffmann & Daniel Saegenschnitter Media Awards for round 8 3 - Mary Sheedy 2 - Gail Kirby 1 - Richard Sheedy
