Roy Orbison makes his third visit to The Box today. Our featured song today was his seventh appearance on the pop charts. Crying was written by Orbison & Joe Melson. The song has been called a rock-bolero, with its blaring strings, hammered tympani, ghostly chorus, with its gently strum of the guitar. The recording featured Bob Moore on bass, Floyd Cramer on piano, Buddy Harman on drums, and Boudleaux Bryant, Harold Bradley & Scotty Moore on guitar. Crying was released in July of 61, reaching #1 on the Cashbox charts and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2002, the song was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Crying as the sixty-ninth song on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. -- Tomorrow & Thursday, being New Years Eve & Day, well feature a couple side-trips ... tunes that were probably played in the earlier days of The Music Box.
