Rua Augusta Arch Praça do Comércio, Lisbon - Portugal This impressive 19th century triumphal arch leads from the Rua Augusta to the Praça do Comércio. Part of the Marquês de Pombal’s design for the rebuilding of the square after the 1755 earthquake, it was only completed in 1873. The top allegorical feature represents Glory crowning Genius and Courage and the Latin inscription reads ‘the greatest virtues’, it is the work of the French sculptor Anatole Calmels. The statues flanking the royal coat of arms are (from left to right) the Lusitanian warrior Viriatus, Vasco da Gama, the Marquês de Pombal and Nuno Álvares Pereira, these being the work of Vítor Bastos. aportugalattraction/portugal-attractions/rua-augusta-arch.htm
