Ruben Gallego 7 hrs · I went on CNNs State of the Union yesterday to talk about all the controversy around American Sniper. Whatever you think of the movie, Im glad it has sparked a conversation about what happens to the families of those who serve. When we go to war, we bring our families with us -- and that experience is often more difficult for those at home than those on the battlefield. While I knew what was happening on the ground, there were several instances where my platoon took casualties and neither my wife nor my mom knew if I was alive for several hours. Highlighting the struggle of our veterans reintegrating is also important. Like many veterans, when I came home I had difficulty finding work and my way in civilian society. That wasnt just difficult for me, but a strain on my wife and family as well. While I know there are a lot of strong opinions about this movie, I hope that at least it has exposed more Americans to the realities of what the families of our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans experienced.
