Rugby Report 11/10/14 Strabane Academy V Inishowen RFC Strabane Academy’s U14’s and U16’s were in action this weekend facing Inishowen Rugby Club at Derry Road and Liskey Road respectively. The U16’s faced a very physical Inishowen XV who were determined to seek revenge for a defeat on home soil earlier in the season. The game did not start well for the visitors who through indiscipline at the breakdown gave away consecutive penalties. After several clever phases number 8 Sproule bundled his way over for the first try. In fairness to their opponents they hit straight back, this time it was Strabane penalised for not releasing and a quick penalty saw their captain force his way over the line for well-taken score. This was to be the climax for the men from the Peninsula as it was one-way traffic from here. Strabane went through phase after phase maintaining continuity and go forward ball it was no surprise when wing forward Nelson spotted a miss match 5 metres out and bull dozed his way to the try time. Just before the end of the half captain Ralph Mealiff playing at fly half for the first time gave a great dummy and side stepped his way under the posts. The second half was a more sedate affair caused largely by an injury to the Inishowen captain, who we wish a speedy recovery. There were two more scores the first by Ralph Mealiff and the second some very quick thinking from Peter Kirk playing at scrum half as the final score was registered 39-7 and it was fair to say this did not flatter the home team. The U14’s had a large squad assembled for the game at the Junior campus on the Derry road, as well as a reasonably large crowd arrived to support both teams. What followed was a tremendous game of Rugby played in a fantastic spirit as both teams tackled and carried ball with determination and courage. Real credit must go to Inishowen who had been on the receiving end of a heavy defeat when the sides met in Carndonagh, they obviously have worked very hard, however still proved no match for a well drilled Strabane outfit. Steven Shields continued his fine scoring run marauding through the opponents territory with some powerful line breaks before registering yet another try to bring his seasons tally to six! Captain Jordan Mealiff seems to be enjoying his secondment to the backs, scoring his fourth try of the campaign, with his direct style of play allowing his team set up quick attacks. Before half time coach Jeff Mealiff rung the changes and credit to Inishowen the took advantage registering a score, however Strabane then seized control of the game, running out comfortable winners 30-5. The 1st XV have a big week coming with a game V local rivals Omagh Academy on Wednesday before they join the Medallion XV on the trip to Osbourne Park to face the might of Royal Belfast Academical Institute
