Rules of a Muslim Home (#7) - ‘Ibaadah (Worship) The inmates of a Muslim home should always be engaged in the ‘ibaadah of Allah Ta‘ala. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has mentioned in a hadeeth: “Do not make your homes into graveyards, for verily Shaitaan runs away from that home wherein Surah Baqarah is recited.” (Tirmizi #2877) In the explanation of this hadeeth, some commentators have mentioned that one’s home should not be void of the recitation of the Quraan Majeed. It is well known that Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had apportioned a section in his house wherein he would recite the Quraan Majeed aloud. Many of the Kuffaar took objection to this as their wives and children would be tempted to listen to the beautiful voice in which he used to recite the Quraan, thus drawing them towards Islam. Moulana Siddeeq Ahmad Baandwi (rahimahullah), a great and eminent scholar, advised his children on his death bed thus: “Allocate a special area/room in the home for ‘ibaadah and salaah. Call it a musjid if you wish. By calling it a musjid, it will not fall under the law of a musjid. Try and keep this place especially for ‘ibaadah (the worship of Allah Ta‘ala). Have a musalla (salaah mat) spread out at all times. Place a copy of the Quraan Majeed in it and have a tasbeeh hanging there. Whenever you get a chance, come and sit in this room and engage in the ‘ibaadah of Allah Ta‘ala. It will also have a positive effect on your children. When they will see this room, the musalla, the Quraan Majeed etc., they will also have a desire to make the ‘ibaadah of Allah Ta‘ala. At a time of need it could be used for other things also. There is no harm in sleeping there as well, as it is not classified a shar‘ee musjid. Moulana Thaanwi (rahimahullah) has written the similar advice and also had a room like this in his home.” (Hayaat e Siddeeq pg. 324) Make a habit of reciting the Quraan daily in the home. 1. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “The houses in which the Quraan Majeed is recited shine unto the inhabitants of the heaven as do the stars shine unto the inhabitants of the earth.” (Shu‘abul Imaan #1982) 2. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “That house wherein the Quraan Majeed is recited, its goodness increases, blessings are multiplied on its inhabitants, angels present themselves there and Shaitaan runs away. Whereas the house in which the Quraan is not recited, life therein becomes straitened and devoid of blessings, angels leave the house and the Shayaateen ravage it.” (Musannaf Abdir Razzaaq #5999) 3. ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “A deserted house is one in which the Quraan Majeed is not recited.” (Musannaf Ibni Abi Shaybah #30645) On a Thursday night and Friday, make a habit of reciting abundant durood at home. Gather the members of the family and recite a few ahaadeeth regarding the virtues of durood. Thereafter recite as much durood as possible. May Allah Ta‘ala assist us in making our homes into gardens of Jannah, aameen.
