Running with Scissors Day 55 I left work early today claiming that I was exhausted, because I didnt get much sleep since the baby was sick. The poor little guy cried all night because he couldnt breath through his snuffles :(. Just a little cold, and nothing that a parents tender care cant help. Tender, vigilant, all night, like clockwork care. But hey, I knew what I signed up for, so its no big deal. I am tired though. The fist thing I did when I got home was give my wife and kids a quick kiss and then went to find Test Dummy #1. Let me back track a bit. In the beginning... of the day, well, I wake up pretty early. Im supposed to reserve this time for running and strength training, but I hurt my ankle, cant find my shoes, shoulders kinda tricky, you get the idea. What I ended up doing was screwing around for a couple of hours, getting online, playing guitar, watching the sunrise, and drinking coffee. Im easily entertained. Before I knew it, I had to rush out the door with barely enough time to iron a shirt and fix my hair. I mention those two because theyre optional. Oh yeah! I found one of the best looks for my new haircut was to just part and brush it. I know a lot of guys probably do this, but Im not a lot of guys, especially when it comes to hair. I didnt even have to touch up the cut since Arianas was good, and she did what I asked. Actually, I havent touched up either cut Ive gotten in Cos II this year, I like the people and proudly wear their work. So thanks Mrs. Lincoln, Mrs. Banker, Shy, and Ariana! Im looking forward to what my next walk-in might offer. But anyway, its always the same. Im constantly trying to outrun the clock to get to school on time. I walk in to school, slinging my black Cos. bag with hot pink trim. Sometimes if the onlookers are lucky, Ill also be carrying a fancy head or two. When you walk into Cos I lab, all the lights are down and you feel like youre entering some kind of quiet night time, but thats just a front. Further inside, things are hopping. All the teachers have been there since God knows when, and are always happy to see us. Our lesson plan is laid out on the board and all the materials for the day are ready to be picked up. Heaven forbid you miss a step because Mrs. Moody has some sort of sixth sense for that kind of thing. Francis, have you -fill in the blank- yet? Um nope. This is when the days start to diverge: curling, braiding, lectures, tests, jobs, thermal curling, curling again, and now cutting. Today started out exceptionally cool. Krystal brought in her metal engraver and asked if I wanted my initials on my shears. Heck Yes! Zip, zip, zip and its.. its beautiful. Krystal was nice enough to do it for the rest of the class too, because shes awesome. We learned about the 180 cut, or increased layer, or long layer. Its pretty much the same idea as the zero degree cut, except instead of cutting to a solid length at the bottom, we start with a section at the top of the head and hold it straight up in the air and trim it to make a guideline. All the hair from the back half of the head is pulled up straight in sections to be cut to the length of the guideline, getting longer as you go further down the head. If its done correctly, the hair should fall in as many layers as you had sectioned, going from shortest length at the guideline to the longest layer towards the nape. The front introduces a traveling guideline, to keep it from looking funny due to layering. A half section of guideline is joined with the cutting section and so on till the jobs done. The 180 is wilder looking than the blunt cut and the layers offer different styling possibilities. This is a good cut for women that want to keep their length but remove weight or some damaged hair. Its also a very nice look in its own right. We only got to try this on our wefts with a left moving blowout, but Im guessing all those layers can lend themselves to cute little flippy curls. After we cleaned up and were sitting around, Shay asked about my photography. Ive been neglecting it for a while, with the new baby and all. In fact, I cant remember how many times Ive forgotten my camera. But, you know what they say, a man can only have one true Master, and for me thats fishing. But if I was to say I had a Mistress, it would be Beauty for sure. So I headed to work long enough to trouble shoot a few problems and hang out with my dad. I was allowed to go home, because Im spoiled, and I rushed home to my loving family and TD#1. Within 20 minutes I had her cut. I cheated though. Mrs. Moody told us in class about some guy that would hang his clients upside down and chop a hanging 180. I used to do something similar when I cut my own hair so I was looking forward to trying it. It went pretty well except having to be conscious to hold the head completely perpendicular. The ends of her hair curled up too and my cuts only approximated a flat plane, but hey, built in chipping! The only way I could think of to get it perfect would be to freeze the head upside down solid and put her on a miter saw. Im looking forward to trying the proper technique for the 180 tomorrow, with my spanking newly tattooed scissors. Thanks Krystal!!
