Russell Parkway Thanks for taking this picture and sharing your observations, Jl King. A few weeks ago someone from New Jersey told me that my latest thriller was too long as a paperback and that it wouldve been more marketable for me to have split it and then sell it as two different parts for $5-$10 each. Never mind that this person most likely never wrote a book in her life--or understands how to structure a novel--but was this her way of telling me that African-Americans have attention spans that are so short that theyd be intimidated by a book thats more than 100 pages? Maybe she was trying to tell me that Black people are too cheap to spend more than $10 on a book even if theyre intrigued by the story? As an author and a Black man, not only was I insulted that she had the audacity to tell me this, but I also felt embarrassed for her because people who share her mentality perpetuate the stereotype that African-Americans dont like to read. Furthermore, by that logic, Black children and teenagers would never enjoy a Harry Potter novel. May I also mention that Alex Cross by James Patterson, or Eric Jerome Dickeys books also have a large African-American following. If a book has a captivating story, great characters, and (also professionally edited) is well-written by a popular author, then a $15-$20 is not an unreasonable price for a 400-500-page SOFTCOVER paperback. Lord knows people will spend a lot more on a movie after theyve purchased popcorn and soda.
