Russia (or Putin’s Russia) has reached a new low. This week, a Dead man, Sergei Magnitsky, beaten to death in prison, was tried in a Moscow court and found guilty of tax evasion. His real crime was investigating official corruption. The judge refrained from passing sentence. How Dostoevsky would have loved this farce. Navalny was arrested again, but released after some hours. His case for tax evasion is still to be heard. Again, his real crime is leading the opposition to Putin’s increasingly repressive regime. Now he is standing for the position of Moscow mayor. They will never let him get away with it. Poor brave bugger. Pussy Riot women Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova are serving two-year prison sentences after being convicted of hooliganism. They were arrested after staging a protest performance against President Vladimir Putin in an Orthodox cathedral in Moscow in February 2012. Maria Alyokhina is reportedly being transferred from a labor camp in the Perm region to another prison today. Her lawyer Oksana Darova confirmed that her client was moved to a detention center in Solikamsk, and will be transferred later to a penitentiary near Nizhny Novgorod. Khodorkovsky is still in prison and likely to have more charges brought What a disaster Russia is – at least under Putin. But then, the Russian people elected him.
