Russian Typhoon Class submarine is the largest nuclear submarine ever built. It has incredible dimensions – 175m long and 23 meters wide. By placing it vertically the Typhoon class submarine could be compared with Mies van der Rohe Seagram building or Swiss Re high-rise by Norman Foster. matterbetter has organized an open-ideas international competition where the main objective was to research architectural potential of this deadly weapon by means of its transformation. The competitors had to research the possibilities for the new program and translate it into an architectural design using the spatial potential of the submarine.
