Ruth 1:16-18 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her. The book of Ruth is special as it describes the love between Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi. These verses describe Ruths commitment to Naomi. That commitment is an example of the commitment that we should have with our Lord. Ruth implored Naomi to not tell her to leave or turn away from her - in the same way, we are not to leave or turn away from our Lord. Ruth told Naomi that where she would go, so would she go and where she would stay, so Ruth would stay. In this same way, we are to stick close to our Lord and follow His leading, guidance and direction. In the next section Ruth claims and embraces the heritage of Naomi. We also must claim and embrace the heritage offered through salvation. Ruth commits herself to Naomi until death and beyond because she states that she will be buried at the same place as Naomi. We too, as Christians, are committed to Our Lord through life into eternity. Ruth ends her plea to Naomi by saying May The Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me. Here Ruth is showing her dedication to Naomi. So must we be willing to show our dedication to The Lord in the same way. These verses end with Naomi seeing the earnestness of Ruth and accepting her desire to be a part of her life - much in the same way The Lord embraces us and gives Himself to us for our salvation. Let us take the example of Ruth and live out our lives with dedication and honor to our Lord. Lord God - thank You for the example Ruth is to us. Thank You that her desire was to serve Naomi over everything. May we take her commitment and live it before You in our lives. May we show the same type of humility and love that she showed Naomi.
