SA bred wins feature in HK last week, SA jock follows suit this week.... John Moore and South African star Jockey Weichong Marwing teamed up to take the featured Class 1 Kwangtung Handicap Cup (1400m) at Sha Tin today, Sunday 15 September and in doing so both trainer and jockey notched a first win of the season. The HK$2 million feature attracted a smart field of 10 runners including last season’s Champion Griffin and Most Improved Horse, All You Wish (120lbs), but it was the Moore-trained Same World (124lbs) that took the spoils at odds of 15-1. After jumping well from gate four, the five-year-old Hawk Wing gelding settled handily behind the pacesetters Aashiq (123lbs) and Bullish Champion (127lbs), and gradually increased his tempo along the fence approaching the home stretch. Bullish Champion maintained his gallop and seemed to hold the upper hand with a furlong remaining, but Same World shifted out for clear running and produced a tremendous turn-of-foot to claim the contest by a neck in a time of 1m 21.3s. Bullish Champion fared best of the Cruz-trained trio in the race, while the Richard Gibson-trained Mizani (121lbs) made up ground to finish another neck away in third, one place ahead of All You Wish. Moore was delighted with the performance of Same World, particularly as he believes the gelding is better over a longer trip. “I always thought that we had a chance to win this. He trialled very well in a dirt trial last week when he showed good speed out of the gates and Marwing was very positive about him running a good race. He got the best position,” said Moore. “He runs well fresh and he is a versatile horse who can perform well from 1400m to 2000m. His next start will be over a mile,” continued the trainer. “I’m happy that we were able to get our first win of the season in a Cup race.” “He’s an international type of horse and he has progressed nicely. I didn’t overcook him before the trials and we will see how far he can go.” Although race-favourite All You Wish was only fourth, he finished well and trainer Dennis Yip was happy with the effort. “The 1400m distance is a bit short for him but he came from the backfield and showed good acceleration, which is not bad,” said the Champion Trainer.
