SABBATICAL NOTES. 28 MARCH 2014. N3. FRIDAY. Adobo with my hands, adobo with rice, and from Madrid, from the house of the Robosas-Guran. WHEN THE ILOKANO POET Delia Caguioa Guran and the expat painter, Hannah Dreiza, offered to give me balon of adobo and boiled white rice, I did not think twice. I said, Yes! There is no mind needed when grace and blessing are offered. Just open your hand and accept. Refusal has no place here, especially now that I have gotten tired of paella for four weeks of my life in Spain, and bocadillo too, and those other things that I craved for from the buñuelos and panerias, but after some time of eating the same desayuno, I had to learn to give up. My Ilokano mind refuses to refuse adobo and rice. And the prospect of eating this Zurich is nothing but manna from the heavens. So let it be on record that from the fourth floor open window of my hotel where I have a view of skyscrapers, I am eating with my hands right now, adobo before, and boiled rice before me, and lots of memories too for that night of despedida we had in Madrid. There, my ading Ofelia Guran, touched my soul, and I had to respond in order to express what was in there, what gratitude I felt, what kindness I received, what goodness I owe all of them even if I have not known them before. I could only thank the heavens for this memory. This is, indeed, going to be a memory of a lifetime, and all those informants, including a community leader, Leah Diana De Leon, will always be in my heart. Forever--and forevermore.
