SABBATICAL NOTES. 31 MARCH 2014. N5. MONDAY. Parallelisms, Parallelisms. I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH Leah Diana De Leon, one of the key civic and cultural leaders of the Filipino community in Madrid during a despedida for me tendered by the Robosa-Guran family and the Balungao Association. In that long conversation, Leah talked about the need to up the ante of Filipinos even as they struggle to become legit members of the Spanish political community. I expressed my observation about talented and gifted Filipinos in Spain getting only odd jobs, with such talent and skills and gifts wasted. Leah said that is true because Filipinos do not attempt to learn the right way of speaking and writing Spanish, a requirement for employment better than doing household work, or work in restaurants. There are many factos, she says, and one of them is the economic pressure, with the need of a family member to earn the needed euro right away as soon he sets foot in the country. Where are the engineers, the teachers, the skilled workers? I asked her. They have to go through the process, she says. It is not true that they do not have a public space in the country. Except that they have to meet the minimum requirement, and one of them is competence in the language. The convalidation of their academic record, of course, is another, which takes some time. Convalidation is the credentialing process of the academic records, a process also used in the United States. ZURICH/
