SABBATICAL NOTES. 8 DE MARZO 2014. N1. Waking Up on a Saturday to Receive the Blessings of Sabbath. The greatness of a teacher, or his claim of greatness, is measured only, and solamente si, by the greatness of his students. When his students have become greater, that is the best test of that greatness. For teaching is that: you have to make your students greater than you are. Failing to do that, you failed as a teacher. I woke up today reading this accolade from two former students I never had the chance to meet again for a long time after leaving their seminary to pursue other interests and to fulfill other work commitments. But even after leaving, I have not forgotten them, and for this last almost last three years--three for Rey Anthony H. Chiu and just last month for Atty Buboy R. Sotto Jr.--I have had the chance to meet up with them separately. Rey, of course, is the kind and generous and smiling soul that entertained us in Tagbilaran and its environs prior to the Bohol earthquake, and Dr Alegria Visaya and Dr Bonifacio Ramos and benefitted from that gesture of this great man. Buboy, it is him that triggered a professional struggle between Prof Amelia Bojo and myself, with Prof Amelia waging the struggle on Facebook and asking all her students to come to her rescue in that competition on who could show more COMELEC numbers that prove the greatness of our students. [There is no annotation on who won here. Wounds when healed, need not be opened again, yes Professor Amy?] These were two students who are their own man now, and I can only believe them, and write before my God I can only say, Deo gratias!
