SACRAMENTO SHERIFF DEPARTMENT PARTNERSHIP WITH WILD HORSE AND BURRO VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department hosted an open media event today at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center, announcing a partnership with the Bureau of Land Management to the most recent vocational training program offered at the facility in an attempt at reducing the rate of recidivism among County offenders. Sheriff Scott Jones is eager to see the program develop, as it fits well with efforts already underway since inception of California’s Public Safety Realignment Act of 2011 to reduce the cycle of incarceration for many offenders. Offenders eligible for the program will have no less than 120 days until their expected release date and will go through a 3-step curriculum on facility and animal safety, horse care/gentling, and training to accept a rider. Offenders working in the Wild Horse Program are required to participate in educational and substance abuse treatment programs as needed, along with individualized pre and post-case management. On September 12, 2014, the Bureau of Land Management delivered twenty (20) wild mustangs to the Correctional center, all of which have adapted well to their new surroundings. The Wild Horse Program project will provide an environment for wild horses and incorporate a curriculum in which an end result goal is to provide offenders work skills and sensitivity training through working with animals while providing a gentled wild horse for public adoption. This Program is funded through grant awards from the Department of the Interior/ Bureau of Land Management under their Wild Horse and Burro Program. The Sacramento Sheriff Department’s goal of the program is to work jointly with the Bureau of Land Management and our sponsors; the Mustangs of America Foundation and the National Mustang Association, while utilizing medium to high risk offenders in gentling wild horses for public adoption.
