SAGE Metro St. Louis provides LGBT Cultural Competency Trainings to diverse communities across the region. During these trainings we focus time on language used to describe people who identify as LGBT. Our emphasis is on using descriptor words that promote welcoming, safe, and respectful environments. We strongly encourage people to not use terms that are considered derogatory and dehumanizing. Over the past several days, we have seen many FB posts regarding the use of the word tranny to describe a person who identifies as transgender. SAGE Metro St. Louis does not promote nor encourage the use of this word. As a reference, the term tranny is considered defamatory. SAGE promotes an atmosphere of respect and as such we will not condone the use of defamatory words at our programs or events.
