SAN DIEGO — A wildfire whipped by Santa Ana winds has blackened hundreds of acres and prompted evacuations of 20,000 homes in neighborhoods from Rancho Bernardo to Fairbanks Ranch. The fire broke out at about 10:40 a.m. in brush south of Camino San Bernardo west of Del Norte High School. Some homes along a golf course in Santaluz are being threatened by the fire spreading up a canyon around 4:20 p.m. No structural damage or injuries had been reported as of 3 p.m. Those displaced by the blaze were being directed to shelter facilities at Rancho Bernardo and Torrey Pines high schools. Dozens of fire engines were deployed to protect homes in a neighborhood immediately east of the fire. Helicopters and Cal Fire air tankers were dropping water and fire retardant on the flames. The fire quickly spread to about six acres, but the wind was pushing it west toward land that had been cleared for construction.
