SANSKRIT VERSUS GERMAN. German language has been taught in Kendriya Vidyalayas as third language for a long time. Recently HRD Ministry decided to replace German with Sanskrit towards the fag end of the academic session. This put thousands of students in a difficult situation. The Supreme Court has provided some relief. However, the issue raises some larger questions. Sanskrit is a classical language and thus rich source of our philosophy and ancient literature. However it is no longer in current use. Latin and Greek are also classical langages in Europe and rich source of ancient texts. However, they are no longer in current use. As such they are not compulsorily taught in schools. In our times we need to teach our children those modern languages that enhance their skills and job opportunities. China is now aggressively pursuing teaching of English as this lanuage has acquired a lot of importance in modern age and opens window to the outside world. To make Sanskrit as a compulsory language is not the need of our times. It can be optional language for those who wish to specialize in it. The present BJP govt. wants India to be a part of the present global world. For this teaching of some foreign language, German or French or Chinese etc. is a must. Thus the recent decision of HRD Ministry is against the broad approach of its govt. Such contradictory posure shows that Hindutava thinking overpowers govts basic approach which is not a sign of good governance.
